My First Trek: A Journey of Discovery with Altitudes Expeditions

Rudragaira peak expeditions

Some journeys begin with a destination in mind. Mine began with curiosity.

When I signed up for the Rudragaira Trek with Altitudes Expeditions, I had never been on a trek before. I was introduced to Altitudes Expeditions through my father’s friends, and while I was excited about experiencing the mountains for the first time, I had no idea how much this journey would teach me—not just about trekking, but about myself.

Preparing for the Mountains

Before I was allowed to join the expedition, Anit Sah—the founder and expedition leader of Altitudes Expeditions, whom I fondly call Anit Uncle—first assessed my fitness.

Instead of simply asking me to prepare on my own, he designed a fitness routine based on my physical condition. My training included jogging and walking with weight, allowing me to experience controlled fatigue similar to what I would encounter in the mountains.

At the time, I felt the preparation was extensive. Looking back now, I realize it was one of the biggest reasons I could enjoy the trek instead of merely enduring it. Every exercise had a purpose, and every session prepared me for what lay ahead.

Meeting the Team

One of my biggest concerns before leaving was that I didn’t know anyone else on the trek.

That changed almost immediately.

Among the participants were Neelam Aunty  a renowned ENT Surgeon and experienced Mountaineer, Trupti Didi a communication professional and amateur athlete, both experienced trekkers who have been associated with Altitudes Expeditions for many years. Along with Anit Uncle and the expedition staff, they created an atmosphere where newcomers immediately felt comfortable.

Within a few hours, conversations flowed naturally. By the next morning, it genuinely felt like I was trekking with people I had known for years. We laughed together, shared stories, and the nervousness I had carried before the trip quietly disappeared.

Gangotri – Learning Begins

Our time in Gangotri was much more than just reaching the starting point of the trek.

Before stepping onto the trail, we were guided through essential mountain knowledge—how to walk efficiently, how to move safely as a team, emergency procedures, and most importantly, why trusting the expedition leaders and guides was critical in the mountains.

The acclimatization walks served two important purposes. They helped our bodies adjust to the altitude while also giving our minds time to slow down and settle into the rhythm of mountain life.

It felt like the mountains were gradually welcoming us before allowing us to venture further.

The Journey to Nala Camp

As we moved towards Nala Camp, mobile networks disappeared.

For the first time in a long while, there were no notifications, no distractions, and no constant connection to the outside world. It was just the mountains, our team, and the journey ahead.

Throughout the trek, the expedition staff constantly checked on every participant. They ensured we maintained a comfortable pace, took timely breaks, and stayed hydrated.

When we reached Nala Camp, everything was thoughtfully organized—from hot meals and warm drinking water to medicines whenever needed. Every detail was taken care of so that we could recover well and prepare for the next day’s climb.

Rudragaira Base Camp

The climb to Rudragaira Base Camp was more demanding, but it was equally rewarding.

As we gained altitude, the scenery became more spectacular with every step. It was easy to understand why so many people dedicate their lives to exploring these mountains.

At the base camp, I experienced real snowfall for the very first time.

Not artificial snow in a mall, but fresh Himalayan snow.

Without thinking twice, I ran outside the tent and built my first-ever snowman, whom I proudly named Kungfu Bonda.

That evening remains one of my favourite memories of the expedition. We gathered inside the dining tent, played games, enjoyed a warm meal prepared by the staff, and later stepped outside to admire the night sky. It truly felt like another world.

Summit Camp – Trust Beyond Fear

The acclimatization climb towards Summit Camp pushed me harder than anything I had done before.

The last hundred metres felt endless.

Even while I was exhausted, Anit Uncle continued explaining glaciers, how they form, and the different types found in the Himalayas. Somehow, learning about the mountains while standing in them made every bit of exhaustion worthwhile.

By the time we reached Summit Camp, the weather had changed.

It started snowing.

Then it continued snowing throughout the evening.

And it kept snowing through the entire night.

For the first time during the expedition, I was genuinely afraid. I had never experienced such weather before.

What stood out most, however, was the commitment of the Altitudes Expeditions team.

Throughout the night, they repeatedly stepped outside in freezing conditions to clear accumulated snow from our tents, ensuring that the weight would not damage them. While we rested inside, they remained alert, constantly monitoring the weather and our safety.

When I told Anit Uncle that I was scared, he calmly reassured me.

“Nothing will go wrong. I will get you down safely.”

Those words stayed with me.

It wasn’t just reassurance—it was confidence built on experience.

The Journey Back

The following morning, the snowfall eased, and we began our descent.

Although descending was physically easier than climbing, the snow-covered trail demanded complete concentration. Every step had to be placed carefully on the slippery terrain.

Reaching Base Camp brought an overwhelming sense of relief.

We had experienced difficult weather, trusted one another, and safely made it through.

From there, we continued our descent towards Gangotri, eventually reaching our accommodation, carrying back far more than just photographs.

What the Mountains Taught Me

When I look back on my first trek, I realize it was never just about reaching a destination.

It taught me resilience.

It showed me the importance of preparation.

It reminded me that physical fitness is only one part of the journey—mental strength is equally important.

The mountains treat everyone the same. They don’t care about age, profession, or experience. They simply teach lessons to those willing to learn.

Most importantly, this journey showed me what makes Altitudes Expeditions different.

It isn’t simply about organizing treks.

Under the guidance of Anit Uncle and with the support of an experienced team, every participant is encouraged to grow, learn, and discover strengths they may never have known they possessed.

As for me, this may have been my first trek.

It certainly won’t be my last.

I know I’ll be returning to the mountains with Altitudes Expeditions many more times.
