Anit Sah (Director)
The perfect combination of an adventurer and an educator. At the age of 17, still in school, Anit became the youngest person in the world to be part of an Everest Expedition. The astonishing facts are that , singularly ill-provided with food and drink, without much oxygen, and absolutely alone with two of his friends gone to the maker, he climbed down 5000ft of a Himalyan giant which had over the years had claimed many lives. It is indeed an outstanding achievement by a single teen aged boy being in the long and yet unfinished history of mountaineering.
He started his work as an educator at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (Uttarkashi) and has climbed over 50 prominent Peaks in India and abroad. He has now also taken responsibility as Secretary of Nainital Mountaineering Club which he had joined as young climber at mere age of 7. He is always at forefront to help many more young and seasoned climbers of Nainital. His expertise goes also to the deepest seas as he is also a certified SCUBA instructor.
Col JC Joshi (Founder)
A winner of the prestigious Arjuna award, Col J.C. Joshi was a part of the first successful Indian Expedition to Mt Everest in 1965. During his tenure in the Indian Army he served as the Commandant of the High Altitude Warfare School, Sonamarg and also as the Principal of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. Both these instilled in him a great love of teaching besides his eternal love of the mountains. This love for teaching coupled with his love for the mountains gave birth to “Altitudes” in 1996.
He was one of the greatest skiers and mountaineers of all time. Soldiers who served with him in his tenure in the Indian Army have deep respectful recollections of his toughness and courage. “Big Joe” as he was popularly known, both through his character and writings, was in the best senses a powerful and motivating educative force in the life of young mountaineers.
He taught us that which we can’t pick up through years of schooling and from the greatest of universities – “Great intelligence can be allied to the highest form of humility and the best courage is quiet and seamed with humour.”
Sherpas remember him as the strong and huge Col Sahib who ate the same food as them and carried heavier loads. His ability to boost high valour and bravery in a soldier or mountaineer that reflected from his commands, was so subtle to ascertain, and it could be witnessed during the Maiktoli expedition and many rescue operations.
